KLEBONIŠKIAI MOUND WITH ANCIENT SETTLEMENT

Nature / landscape

Right next to the village of Pakalniškės lies a piece of millennium-old Lithuanian history, i.e., Pakalniškės Mound (Kleboniškiai Hill or Kleboniškiai Mound). It stands on a separate hill and dates back to the 1st millennium BC. The mound site is irregularly triangular, elongated, 25 m long and 15 m wide, with steep slopes 6-8 m high. There is a settlement at the foot of the 0.2 ha site. Smooth pottery and clay plaster were found in the 1st millennium BC cultural layer, only 30 cm thick. On the western slope there is a burial mound from the 1st millennium. According to the stories of the people of the Radviliškis region, collected by the members of the Lithuanian Archaeological Society, strange things used to happen on Kleboniškiai Mound and its vicinity. Once a man was riding home late at night. They reached Kleboniškiai Hill. They rode on and on until the dawn came, but they couldn’t get home. In the morning, they saw they had been going in circles all the time. Perhaps the wicked one confused them.
