What lies beneath the lagoon’s surface? What “eats” the shores? What is the thickest in Lithuania, and what is the most charming of all? Discover the answers to these questions at the exhibition The Transformation of the Nemunas into a Lagoon, which is showcased in the Visitor Centre of Kaunas Lagoon Regional Park. This is where your journey through the Park begins!
The centrepiece of the exhibition is the Time Machine – a gateway to the past. Step inside and witness how the last glacier retreated from what is now Lithuania, how the Kaunas Lagoon and its surrounding landscape took shape. A significant part of the exhibition is dedicated to the history of the villages submerged beneath the waters of the Nemunas Valley. The Footprints on the Lagoon Bottom exhibit lets you dive into the past – press the interactive buttons and see how these now-vanished villages once looked.
For younger visitors, we narrate this region’s history as if it were a fairy tale. But this is no fiction – it is a lived experience, passed down through generations. The people whose roots lie beneath the lagoon’s waters are known as Dugniečiai – residents of the depths. We have gathered, and continue to collect, archival photographs that capture the landscape and spirit of the old Nemunas Valley. The transformation of the Nemunas into a lagoon remains one of Lithuania’s most striking landscape metamorphoses of the 20th century.
