VIŠTYTIS STONE

Nature / landscape

The Vištytis Stone is the sixth-largest boulder in Lithuania, located near the town of Vištytis, on the right side of the Vištytis–Kybartai road. This impressive glacier-origin stone, 4 meters high, 7 meters long, and almost 5 meters wide, resembles a giant beast with a curved back. The depression on its top is called the "Devil's Footprint" – it is said that the devil, carrying the stone to destroy a church, dropped it in fear after hearing a rooster crow and left his footprint. Locals believed that the drops of water collected in the depression had healing powers.
It is believed that in ancient times, the stone was a Baltic altar, and in the 18th century, it was mentioned in church documents as the Stone of the Holy Trinity. Today, the Vištytis Stone remains a mysterious place, steeped in legends of the victory of good over evil, symbolized by a sculpture erected in the town in 1997. It is not only a natural monument but also a living witness of history and ancient beliefs, attracting travelers with its mystical aura.
