The Ethnographic Exhibition of Salakas Region invites you to step into the past and explore the daily life, traditions, and craftsmanship of Salakas from the late 19th to the 20th century. This ethnographic exhibition brings to life the town’s character, its most cherished festivals, old crafts, businesses, and even the town’s most notable figures and ethnic minorities. Historical photographs, maps, and carefully restored artifacts provide a glimpse into the region’s rich history. One of the exhibition’s highlights is a collection of 40 handwritten manuscripts, meticulously compiled by teacher Vida Žilinskienė. These manuscripts document local legends, folktales, lost villages, traditional crafts, celebrations, games, war volunteers, cultural heritage, and the evolution of the town. Book lovers can also enjoy an impressive collection of early 20th-century Lithuanian schoolbooks and methodological guides for teachers. The theological section showcases 19th-century prayer books, hymnal collections (Lith. kantičkos), and theological textbooks.
Nestled in the Visitors Centre and far from the ocean, Vida Žilinskienė’s Marine Museum is possibly the most inland marine museum in the world – a truly one-of-a-kind collection gathered over 50 years. The museum houses more than 4,000 marine exhibits, including vibrant corals, rare seashells, fossils, and unique souvenirs from around the world. According to collector and teacher Vida Žilinskienė, the number of exhibits has already surpassed 4,000 – and the collection is still growing! Visitors will be amazed by the giant lobster, a Japanese sea urchin, a preserved baby shark, a fierce piranha, and even Indonesian shell money once used as currency. And don’t forget to make a wish – the friendly spirit Kaukutis just might make it come true! A visit to the museum is more than just a visual experience. You will hear thrilling tales of perilous sea voyages, discover the secrets of poisonous shells and healing cuttlefish powder, and marvel at the countless rare and unusual creatures from the ocean depths. And if you truly long for the sea, simply hold a shell to your ear – you might just hear the waves whispering. Every 1000th visitor wins a special prize from Vida Žilinskienė! What is it? Visit and find out – maybe this time, luck will be on your side!
