VAIGUVA RIVER-STREET

Historic sites

Vaiguva River-Street – a unique place in Lithuania, where the stream is the only way for locals to reach their homes. The flat Vaiguva stream, flowing from the Vaiguviškiai hillfort, turns here into a "street" – a waterway paved with a navigable path, which locals still use to reach their homes by walking or driving through the water. Numerous springs flow into the Vaiguva, so the water is always clean and fresh, and the stones on the riverbed remind one of a natural mountain stream.
The Vaiguva River-Street stretches about 200 meters, and there are only a few homesteads nearby, with no other access roads – making the visit truly unforgettable. Locals say that before World War I, a massive boulder lay here, on which Vincas Kudirka used to rest and write. It is said that he often met with Finnish writer Maila Talvio near it. Later, the stone was blown up, and its millstones today decorate the center of Plokščiai.
When visiting this place, it's worth stopping by the nearby Vaiguviškiai hillfort – a lesser-known site but steeped in stories about the Teutonic Knights and Gediminas' warriors. The Vaiguva River-Street is a place where history, nature, and daily life blend into an unforgettable experience.
