UTENA CENTRE OF TRADITIONAL CRAFTS “THE BARN” (Lith. “SVIRNAS”)

Established in the year 2013 as a branch of the Utena Local History Museum, the Centre of Traditional Crafts “The Barn” operates within one of the former Utena Manor buildings.

The Centre hosts educational workshops where certified artisans pass on their traditional skills, including paper cutting, belt weaving, scapular weaving, loom weaving, wool felting, wrist warmer knitting, wicker weaving, klomp making, wood carving, cross crafting, spindle making, toy making, straw ornament weaving, clay whistle sculpting, herbal medicine preparation, gingerbread baking, and egg decorating.

Visitors of “The Barn” can explore an exhibition showcasing folk art crafted by Utena’s heritage artisans, engage with various materials and tools, and unleash their creativity to craft unique handmade pieces. The Centre also offers captivating stories about the hardworking artisans of Utena, their lives, and craftsmanship. Let the traditions of folk art live on!

The Centre of Traditional Crafts employs 25 traditional artisans, 12 of whom are certified masters of traditional crafts. It has certified 133 national heritage products and offers seven non-formal education programs.
