The center of Żydkiemy is home to the only monument to the šakotis cake in Poland. The šakotis is a traditional cake shaped like a tree trunk, traditionally baked over an open fire, and known in Suwałki and Lithuania. Legend has it that šakotis was baked for the Polish and Lithuanian armies before the Battle of Grunwald, and the method of baking dates back to the early Middle Ages. Žydkiemis also hosts an annual Šakotis Festival (August 15), which attracts tourists from Poland and abroad. The monument and festival are an opportunity to see history, feel the local atmosphere, and taste real, traditional šakotis.
