THE HOLY PLACE ON ROSPUDA

Nature / landscape

On the edge of the Augustów Forest, in a picturesque bend of the Rospuda River, there is an extraordinary clearing called the Holy Place – for centuries surrounded by reverence and mystery.
This is an ancient place of worship, whose tradition dates back to pagan times. Among the wooden fences stand a chapel, crosses, shrines, and a shrine. A special monument is the legendary Yotvingian cross from 1283, which, despite its turbulent history, has survived to this day.
The Holy Place is also famous for its annual celebration of St. John's Day (June 24th). The faithful gather here for solemn Mass, continuing the centuries-old tradition of prayer, bathing in the miraculously healing waters of the Jałówka River, and offering gifts at the crosses.
This is one of the most atmospheric and mysterious places in the Suwałki region – perfect for experiencing the spiritual atmosphere of the region and its rich history.
