The Sudargas Hillfort Complex is an impressive ensemble of five hillforts, standing high above the Nemunas valley, where the riverbanks rise to 40 meters at this location. These hillforts – Balnakalnis, Žydkapiai, Bevardis, Pilaitė, and Vorpilis – are comparable in size and historical significance to the famous Kernavė hillforts.
In the Middle Ages, one of the most important defensive castles stood here, and today breathtaking views of the Nemunas river, forests, and fields open up from their summits. Archaeological finds, including spearheads, stone axe fragments, and ancient pottery, show that people have lived in this area since the Stone Age.
The earliest records of Sudargas as a place are found in the chronicles of the Teutonic Order’s chronicler Peter of Dusburg. Moreover, this area is connected to the world-famous writer J.D. Salinger – his great-grandparents came from Sudargas.
On the slope of one hillfort stands a monument dedicated to Salinger’s novel The Catcher in the Rye, engraved with a quote fitting this place: “I keep the kids from falling over the edge.” The sculptor is Nerijus Erminas.
The Sudargas hillforts are a place where history, legends, and natural beauty merge into a unique spectacle.
