Šaudzyklos Hill – an impressive sand cliff in the Marcinkonys region, rising to 13 meters in height. From its peak, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Grūda Valley, with its winding river and lush meadows. During the Polish occupation, a shooting range operated here, later taken over by the Germans. At the foot of the hill, wooden tracks with a target wagon were set up, where soldiers would shoot from a small house located in the nearby forest. The high slope would "absorb" missed bullets, and after the war, local children would curiously slide down the sand and search for pieces of lead to make fishing weights.
Special stairs lead down to the ancient terraces of the valley and the Grūda Riverbank. It is an excellent place not only for a nature walk but also to connect with living history. Here, one can feel the echoes of war while enjoying the calming landscape of Dzūkija. Šaudzykla Hill is a place where history and nature merge into one unforgettable experience.
