RUDAMINA MOUND WITH SETTLEMENT

Nature / landscape

Rudamina mound – one of the most impressive witnesses of the Jotvingian heritage in the South Lithuania region, captivating both history enthusiasts and travelers. Located on a 198-meter high hill formed during the post-glacial period, it was a defensive center from the 5th to the 14th century. In 1240, it housed one of the most powerful Jotvingian castles – the castle of Prince Ringaudas, where, according to legends, Mindaugas was crowned as king. The fortifications of the mound – wooden fences, embankments, and walls – were rebuilt multiple times after attacks, and in 1381, the Teutonic Knights stormed it, even using the first gunpowder bombs. Jonas Basanavičius associated Rudamina mound with another castle – Naujapilis, mentioned in the Chronicle of Vygaudas of Marburg.
Upon reaching the summit, visitors are greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view: Marijampolė is visible, and those with sharp eyesight can even spot Vilkaviškis. Legend has it that cursed treasures are hidden in the hill, and the slopes are said to be the resting place of ancient warriors. The legend also tells of the brave maiden Raudonė, who defeated enemies here.
Although the mound has suffered damage from excavations, its impressive embankments and the mysterious historical aura continue to attract visitors. The spirit of the past lingers here, inviting reflection on the battles for the homeland and a closer look at history.
