VISITOR CENTRE OF AUKŠTADVARIS REGIONAL PARK

Visitor centers

The Royal Route has passed through Aukštadvaris since the 9th–14th centuries, connecting Vilnius, Trakai, and Birštonas. This route was part of Lithuania’s fortified defence line, which included Navinpilis (Aukštadvaris Castle), once standing atop the Aukštadvaris Hillfort. Upon arrival at the Visitor Centre of Aukštadvaris Regional Park, guests are greeted by a fragment of the Royal Route, leading them into the exhibition and transforming into a section of stone-paved road. By walking this path, visitors will uncover significant historical facts from medieval times to the present that define the Aukštadvaris region. The exhibition highlights the region’s natural landscape, featuring rolling hills, pristine lakes, and dense forests that remain largely untouched by human activity. Here, in the highest hills of the Dzūkija Upland, the Verknė and Strėva Rivers begin their journey. The Park’s dramatic terrain is showcased through interactive displays, including fascinating hill and valley formations. Visitors can also explore one of the Park’s most famous landmarks – The Devil’s Pit (Lith. Velnio Duobė), a natural monument steeped in legend. Additional interactive terminals provide insights into the area’s rich natural and cultural heritage. For outdoor enthusiasts, an interactive route map guides hikers and cyclists through the region. Those who enjoy challenges can piece together a puzzle of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, uncovering hidden treasures of Lithuanian folklore along the way.
