Pavištytis mound is an impressive and mysterious place, rising to 229.5 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views of the Vištytis region from its peak. This mound is located at the edge of an elevation and is considered the highest point in the Vilkaviškis district. Its triangular platform, surrounded by deep ravines and a marshy part of the lake, dates to the 1st millennium and hides traces of an ancient settlement – rough pottery, clay plaster, and burnt stones have been found here.
It is said that a church once sank into the mound, and on Easter morning, bells can be heard ringing from their depths. Although the mound has been significantly damaged by plowing and trenches, its surroundings still preserve the spirit of ancient times. As you climb to the top, you can feel the scale of the old fortifications and imagine how the ancestors stood guard here.
This is an excellent place for travelers looking for history, natural beauty, and a touch of mysticism. If you want to uncover the secrets of mounds and experience their magic, Pavištytis mound is a must-stop on your journey.
