The Novaraisčio Ornithological Reserve is a true sanctuary for bird lovers and nature enthusiasts in southwestern Lithuania, located at the junction of Kaunas, Šakiai, and Kazlų Rūda municipalities. Established in 1988 from a former peat bog, the reserve now covers 826 hectares and is known as one of the most important bird breeding and migration sites. After the peat bog was exploited and the water level raised, open water bodies formed, which became a favorite spot for migrating birds. In autumn, the reserve can host up to 3,000 cranes, representing 3% of the entire Western Palearctic population. A total of 33 protected bird species can be found here, including sea eagles, swan geese, black-necked grebes, and grouse. The reserve has a well-equipped birdwatching tower and a parking area, making it an ideal place for birdwatching tours. Surrounding the reserve is the Kazlų Rūda forest, rich in natural wildlife, peace, and fascinating stories about the area's past. Once a high bog full of small marshes, it nourished streams and attracted people for cranberry picking or wildlife watching. Novaraisčio is not only a haven for birds but also for wild nature, offering a feeling of being in a true kingdom of nature.
