Merkinė mound invites you to touch the history of the land and feel the spirit of ancient times. From its summit, you can enjoy a stunning view of the confluence of the Neman and Merkys rivers, surrounded by forests and islands – a scene that inspires both nature lovers and history enthusiasts. Once located here, the Merkinė Castle, built in the 13th–15th centuries, became one of the most important military centers of Lithuania in the fight against the Teutonic Knights. It was burned, rebuilt, and attacked numerous times, and Lithuanian rulers visited its halls.
Legend has it that it was here that Jogaila granted Magdeburg rights to Merkinė and Vilnius. To this day, the fortifications of the hill fort and the remains of ancient settlements at its base testify to its past prosperity. Upon reaching the summit, the view encompasses not only the grandeur of nature but also the echoes of past battles. The mound is in the Dzūkija National Park, just a few minutes' drive from the center of Merkinė, making it easily accessible to travelers.
Local legends tell that the mound was constructed by the king's soldiers using their hats after they had a prophetic dream about a magnificent city. Historical records first mention Merkinė in 1359, calling it one of the strongest and most important fortresses not only in Lithuania but also in Eastern Europe. Nearby, the Merkinė observation tower allows you to appreciate this natural and historical wonder from above. While visiting, you can not only hear the history but also feel it as you walk the same path once trodden by warriors and rulers.
