Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius Memorial Museum in Subartoniai village invites visitors to embark on a journey through the world of the famous writer from the Dainava region. The museum is housed in a late 19th-century Dzūkian homestead, where Vincas Krėvė-Mickevičius was born and raised in 1882.
During the tour, you will hear stories about the writer's education, his pedagogical and political activities, and his life in Azerbaijan, where he met his wife, Rebecca Karak. The museum displays Krėvė's collection of proverbs, sayings, and folk songs. This living form of memory transmits the values and worldview of our ancestors, reflecting the human connection to nature, the rhythm of work, community, and moral norms. Songs accompanied rituals, festivals, and work, creating a sacred bond between people and gods. Through them, ancient worldviews, mythological stories, and customs have been preserved, allowing us today to experience the authentic spiritual world of the Balts.
Nearby is the legendary Gilšė Lake, described in "The Legends of the Old People of Dainava Land." According to the legend, a lost manor lies at the bottom of the lake, with its towers appearing only on hot days when the water is calm. This mystical setting, which inspired the writer's works, adds to the authentic natural experience of visiting the museum.
