Liškiava is a village of exceptional beauty, located in the Dzūkija National Park on the banks of the Nemunas River. It is famous for its baroque Holy Trinity Church and the Dominican Monastery ensemble. One of the most impressive landmarks here is the Liškiava Mound Complex.
The Liškiava Mound, also known as Castle Hill, Witch's Wall, or Perkūnas Sanctuary, offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the Nemunas River and the surrounding area. The remains of a 14th–15th century stone castle found here hint at a time when this location could have served as an important defensive fortress of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. According to legend, it is believed that this could have been the capital of Mindaugas, and the myths of Vincas Krėvė mention the mythical ruler Raivedis, who ruled over these lands.
At the Liškiava manor site, cultural layers with striped ceramics have been found. Further research suggests that the initial settlement of the hill can be dated back to the 1st millennium BC, and the hill itself, like Castle Hill, can be considered a hillfort.
Next to the hillfort stands a monumental sculpture by artist Tomas Vosylius, called "The Axe." This sculpture was created based on a unique archaeological find – a 5th–7th century ornamented spade-shaped axe, symbolizing the local dukes and warriors.
Archaeological excavations revealed that people lived on these hills as early as 4,000 years ago. The findings, including a clay oven, striped ceramics, and animal bones, open a window into the daily life of ancient Liškiava.
Nearby, you can find the mystical Witch's Stone, which, according to legend, was carried by a fairy who wanted to dam the Nemunas River. However, upon the crowing of a rooster, it slipped from her hands and remained by the roadside.
At the hillfort site, there is a designated fire pit area, and cobblestones are engraved with significant events from Liškiava's history – from its first mention in 1044 to the post-war partisan struggles.
Liškiava fascinates not only with its history but also with its magical atmosphere, blending hillforts, legends, archaeological treasures, and the stunning nature of Dzūkija.
