LEIPALINGIS

Museums

The name Leipalingis is attributed to the times of the Yotvingians, and the two nearby hillforts further confirm that this area was home to ancient Yotvingian settlements with defensive centers. Today, Leipalingis is a cozy town in Dzūkija, located just 11 km from Druskininkai, known for its rich history and distinctive landscape. The town is surrounded by the Seira River, lakes, and the pine forest of Leipalingis Forest, while at the heart of the town stands the classical-style Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, with a 19th-century bell tower. Leipalingis Manor, a cultural heritage gem dating back to the early 16th century, invites visitors to learn about the history and traditions of the region. The local museum displays archaeological findings, ethnographic exhibits, and historical documents that reflect the area’s past. Visitors can stroll through the old manor park or enjoy educational programs that reveal the secrets of the manor. Leipalingis is also famous for its history of partisan struggles – a monument to the fighters for Lithuania’s freedom stands in the town. Every summer, the Yotvingian Festival is held in Leipalingis, a tradition that has continued for several years. Information about upcoming events can be found on the Druskininkai Culture Center website at www.druskininkukulturoscentras.lt
