HISTORICAL MUSEUM IN EŁK

Museums

The Ełk Historical Museum is a municipal cultural institution established in 2012 and housed since 2018 in the historic building of the former Ełk Narrow Gauge Railway station, dating from 1912 to 1918. The museum showcases the history of Ełk and Masuria as a crossroads of cultures. Its collections include exhibits on history, archaeology, ethnography, art, and technology, including railways. Permanent exhibitions, such as "Ełk from the Beginning," tell the story of the city from prehistoric times to the present day. A key element of the museum's activities is the Ełk–Sypitki narrow-gauge railway, open in the summer and a major tourist attraction. Historic railway machinery and an OL49 steam locomotive can be seen around the building. The museum offers rides on the Ełk Narrow-Gauge Railway, currently offering tourist passenger transport on trains pulled by a diesel locomotive or a steam locomotive with both enclosed and open-top carriages.
