The hillfort in Skomack Wielki is located on a promontory between Lakes Orzysz and Wylewy, on a hill known as Grodzisko. It consists of two lines of ramparts surrounding an oval courtyard (approximately 58 x 25 m). Archaeological excavations have uncovered remnants of wooden and earthen ramparts and a gate to the east. Traces of older settlements from the early Iron Age and the Migration Period have also been found. In the Middle Ages, the promontory may have been an island. The hillfort, dating from the 9th–11th centuries, is clearly visible in the landscape, but it is not developed for tourism and has no designated trail. It has been known in literature since the 16th century by many names, including Grodzisko, Schlossberg , Ostrów, and Werder.
