The Borecka Forest is the largest forest complex in the Elk Lake District, located east of Lake Mamry, in the northeastern part of Masuria. It covers an area of approximately 230 km² and is characterized by undulating terrain with moraine hills, the highest of which, Lipowa  Mountain, rises to 223 meters above sea level. Difficult agricultural conditions have allowed the preservation of natural deciduous forests, primarily oak-hornbeam forests, growing on fertile soils. Among the hills are peat bogs and numerous lakes, including Szwalk Wielki, Pilwag , Litygajno , Haszno , and Ciche.
The most valuable parts of the forest are protected in four reserves: Masuria (a waterfowl habitat near Lakes Szwalk Wielki and Pilwąg ), Lake Borki (with its rich, multi-species stands), Lipowy Jar (protecting mature deciduous forests on steep hills), and Wyspa Lipowa (a small floral reserve). The Borecka Forest is an excellent place for peaceful hikes and nature observation – you can encounter bison, among others, which have their own sanctuary here.
