The Bachanowo Boulder Field is a nature reserve in the Czarna Hancza Valley, south of Lake Hańcza, within the Suwalki Landscape Park. Established in 1972, it covers an area of 0.98 hectares. It is one of the most interesting boulder fields in Poland – the meadow contains approximately 10,000 erratic boulders, ranging in circumference from 0.5 to 8 meters. The boulders were carried by a glacier from Scandinavia and exposed after the Bachanowo esker was eroded by glacial waters. The finer material was washed away, while the heaviest boulders remained in place. They lie on four terrace levels , from the riverbed to the outwash surface 25 meters above. The reserve is open to tourists – an educational trail runs through it. It is an ideal place to observe the unique post-glacial landscape of the Suwalki Region.
