ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM, ALYTUS REGIONAL MUSEUM BRANCH

Museums

Embark on a journey through the oldest layers of Dzūkija's history at the Archaeological Museum. Located in the vaulted cellars of the 16th century, the exhibition “When Trees Were No Longer for Souls” tells the story of the Jotvingians' customs, the Stone and Iron Ages, and the first steps of Alytus toward becoming a city. Here, you can see flint tools, findings from the hillfort cemetery, and even treasures from the Bazorai burial site. The exhibition brings history to life – visitors can grind grain using stone mills, polish stone, or carve wood with ancient tools. The museum is located near the historical square of Old Alytus, where the town hall once stood. Archaeological findings here reveal Alytus' history from its origins up to the 16th century when the town was granted city rights. The exhibition's creators and designers have crafted a space where history becomes alive and accessible to everyone.
The history experience is enriched with an interactive computer screen and specially designed educational programs for families, children, and curious minds, which must be booked in advance by calling +370 315 73505. A list of educational programs can be found here: https://www.alytausmuziejus.lt/tema/archeologija/.
